Adventure Log: February 22, 2020: Sojourners in Volenroft

Night in the Tower Room
Night has fallen on Plum Island. With the island engulfed in a shroud of fog and the fortress overrun with swarms of undead, the adventurers, together with Sweeney and the Ironfists, have taken refuge in the tower room. In a breathtaking display of heroic might, they have slain a dozen of Blake's ghoulish minions along with Blake himself. As the group assembles at the top of the tower stairs, however, Ven sees Blake's foot start to twitch. The heel of the dead sea captain's boot begins to thump violently against the dusty floorboards. Blake's eyes click open, suffused now with an unholy green light.

"Nik, Korric!" the cleric shouts. "He's not quite dead!"

"What foul god?" Korric says with venom, drawing his Colts and taking aim as the reanimated ghast transforms into an undead tentacled horror. Korric nearly dies while fighting the creature, which absorbs Ven into itself. Nik uses her magic to pull the cleric free and drive the sea monster down the tower stairs. The party shelters in Leomund's tiny hut, which Nik casts as a ritual from the old spell book she found in the library. When morning comes, the fog and its undead inhabitants withdraw again to the reefs where the Elizabeth Dane was lured to its destruction a century ago.

As the party attempts to escape to one of the neighboring islands, they see a young man and woman running down the beach, waving for help. They are Michael and Agatha Margrave, descendants of the margrave of Antioch, Blake's betrayer. The brother and sister have been hiding in a secret cellar in the scullery.

Summons of the Ghoul King
In recent months, Agatha has been experiencing horrible dreams about a steaming vent in the sea floor. In her dreams, she rises from her bed and wanders out of the fortress to the beach, and walks into the sea. She swims down to the ocean vent, which draws her. The vent exudes evil. From within it, the Ghoul King, Doresain, calls to her lovingly, inviting her to be with him.

Agatha has been sleepwalking since the dreams started, and her brother will sometimes find her down at the beach, standing in the surf, gazing off toward the reefs at the entrance to the cove.

Aided by Nik's water breathing spell, the three adventurers head out for the reefs to investigate the mysterious vent.

The Black Pool
A century ago, on the mist-shrouded night when the Elizabeth Dane crashed against the reefs, Blake called out to Doresain for mercy, and the Ghoul King heard Blake’s plea, imbuing Blake and his lepers with undeath. Inside the sunken remains of Blake's ship, Ven and Nik find the vent from Agatha's dreams. It is a portal to Volenroft, Doresain's domain on the 112th layer of the Abyss, a massive necropolis and hunting ground for the Hunger and his ghoul servants. As Nik approaches the portal, she is overcome by the malign power of Eva's locket. She summons her raven from a pocket dimension, puts the locket around her neck, and leaps into the portal. [1] Ven leaps in after the tiefling, attempting to save her.

In Volenroft, Ven emerges from the Black Pool, a great lake of unholy water that serves as a portal to the White Kingdom. On the shore of the lake, Nik sits gazing at the locket, in thrall to the Ghoul King. Ven subdues the tiefling and frees her from the locket's curse, and then casts a sending spell to contact Korric. The gunslinger rallies the Ironfists to help him save his companions. Together, Korric and the dwarves venture out to the reefs and enter the portal. When they break the surface of the Black Pool and wade to shore, Ven gives them an ominous greeting.

"Welcome to Volenroft," the cleric says.

Korric gazes to the distant horizon, where Doresain's citadel, the great charnel house known as the Tower of Teeth, looms in shadow.

[1] Nik had used her thievery skills to lift the locket off of Ven and used her raven to hide the stolen object in a pocket dimension so that Ven couldn't find it when he magically searched The Enchantress using a locate object spell.
